About the Company

Hooker Furnishings Corporation, incorporated in Virginia in 1924, is a designer, marketer and importer of casegoods (wooden and metal furniture), leather furniture, fabric-upholstered furniture, lighting, accessories, and home decor for the residential, hospitality and contract markets. The company also domestically manufactures premium residential custom leather, custom fabric-upholstered furniture and outdoor furniture. The company's product lines cover the design spectrum of residential furnishings: traditional, contemporary and transitional, and are in the 'good', 'better' and 'best' product categories, which carry medium and upper price points.

Revenue Generation

The company generates revenue primarily through the sale of home furnishings and hospitality furniture products. Revenue is recognized at the time of shipment to the customer. The company sells to wholesale and retail merchandisers located principally in North America. The company operates through three reportable segments: Hooker Branded, Home Meridian, and Domestic Upholstery, with the remainder of its businesses aggregated into 'All Other'.

Investment Thesis
Executive SummarySituation: Hooker Furnishings (HOFT) is a Turnaround_Candidate facing a 31.9% revenue collapse and a $64.0 million net debt burden while navigating an active proxy fight with Global Value Investment Corp. (GVIC). Debate: Management's 'shrink-to-grow' strategy and the Margaritaville license are viewed by the market as recovery drivers, while our analysis suggests the company is a value trap trading at 3.8x its liquidation value. Conclusion: We recommend a Sell with a $5.11 target, as the -15.2x interest coverage and negative free cash flow indicate a high probability of equity impairment.
